Summary:
A whitish shrimpgoby covered in red-edged orange spots, three distinct narrow reddish bars on the head and body (enclosing orange spots) followed by two additional indistinct bars below the second dorsal fin.The Volcano Shrimpgoby inhabits deep reefs and is rarely seen.

Distribution |
Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific: Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Palau and Australia. Inhabits deep sandy/rubble outer reef slopes, sharing burrows with alpheid shrimps. |

Dorsal fin VI + I, 12; Anal fin I, 12; Pectoral fin 19-20; Longitudinal scale series 66-71. Greatest body depth 5.0-5.6 in SL; pelvic fin separate, joined only by low basal membrane; midline of nape scaled, scales on side of nape extending forward to above operculum; caudal fin more or less pointed, usually longer than head. |

Etymology |
The specific name rhyax is from Greek meaning volcano, in reference to the fiery colours of the species. |
