A reddish to reddish-orange pinjalo usually with a pale spot on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. The colour can either rapidly fade or intensify.

Distribution |
Near Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island in the Timor Sea, to NE of Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, and reefs off Innisfail to Hervey Bay, Queensland; planktonic larvae have been collected further south. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific: Oman and the Persian Gulf east to the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji, north to Taiwan and southern Japan. Inhabits deep coral and rocky reefs, often forming large school. |

Dorsal fin XII, 13; Anal fin III, 8-9; Pectoral fin 17-18; Lateral-line scales 48-50; Gill rakers 7-8 + 16-17. Body depth 2.1-2.8 in SL, dorsal and ventral profiles equally rounded; oblique scale rows along back becoming horizontal on the caudal peduncle. |

Feeding |
Feeds on benthic and planktonic invertebrates, and possibly small fishes. |

Taken with handlines, traps and bottom trawls, and on deep drop-lines in Australia. |

Similar Species |
Differs from the Pinjalo, Pinjalo pinjalo, in having a pale spot on the upper caudal peduncle and in lacking yellow coloration on the pelvic and anal fins. |
