Distribution |
Ningaloo Reef and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore and Cartier reef sin the Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to south of Bateman's Bay, New South Wales; possibly also the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits shallow reefs with mixed algal and coral growth to a depth of about 15 m. Individuals usually prop on the reef, darting into crevices when threatened. |
Remarks |
In Australia, this species has been confused with Eviota albolineata and E. guttata. Greenfield and Winterbottom (2016) suggested that E. teresae was endemic to Fiji, E. albolineata endemic to the Central Pacific, and E. guttata endemic to the Western Indian Ocean - and referred to the other Pacific populations as E. cf. teresae. Greenfield (2017) subsequently accepted that E. teresae occurred in the entire Western Pacific. |
Etymology |
The species is named teresae in honour of Teresa Arámbula Greenfield who assisted in collecting the type material and has provided field, editorial, and moral support to the first author for many years. |
