Summary:
A translucent greenish to yellowish pygmygoby with an internal series of 5-6 brownish bars (sometimes faint), the last a vertically elongate spot on the caudal peduncle, a pair of large dark brown spots on the pectoral-fin base (sometimes a single spot), numerous reddish to dark brown spots on the head, and a reddish-brown spot on each scale.

Distribution

North West Cape to Kendrew Island, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the tropical east-Indo-west Pacific: Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa east to Tuamotu Archipelago, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia and the Austral Islands.
Inhabits sheltered reefs, forming groups among branches of Acropora coral, in depths to about 30 m

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I, 7-9; Anal fin I, 8-9; Pectoral fin 14-17; Longitudinal scale series 23-25.
Body depth 3.5-5.1 in SL; pectoral-fin rays simple; spinous dorsal-fin elongate or filamentous in both sexes; genital papilla nonfimbriate; ctenoid scales except cycloid on breast, none on head, nape and pectoral fin base; separated pelvic fins, bases joins by thin membrane; well developed fifth pelvic ray.

Etymology

The specific name distigma is from Greek prefix di- (= two) and stigma (= spot) in reference to the two black spots on the pectoral-fin base.
