Distribution

Northern Great Boot Reef, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to One Tree Island, Queensland. the species may also occur in Papua New Guinea.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin variola (= spotted), in reference to the spots on the first dorsal spine and filament.
