Summary:
A translucent pygmy goby with a red internal stripe along the vertebral column, white dashes above the stripe, reddish internally on the abdomen with two rows of white spots along the side, short red bars across the back, white spots and dashes on head, a round dark spot on the middle of the caudal-fin base, and 3-4 dark wavy vertical lines on the caudal fin.

Distribution

Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia, to Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea to One Tree Island, Queensland; also reefs in the Coral Sea and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in tropical Indo-west-central Pacific: Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba, across the Indian Ocean to Indonesia; north to Taiwan, Japan, Marshall Islands, and Kiribati; east to New Caledonia, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna, Samoa, and Tonga; south Australia.
Often inhabits dead algal-covered reefs.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I,7-10; Anal fin I, 7-8.
Cephalic sensory-canal pore system lacking the IT pore only (pattern 2); all pectoral-fin rays unbranched; dorsal/anal-fin formula 8-9/7-8 (usually 9/8 in the Pacific); fifth pelvic-fin ray 5-10% of fourth ray.

Similar Species

The similar Hairfin Eviota, Eviota prasites, lacks black spot on the tail base, and has more red on the body.

Etymology

The species is named zebrina (= zebra-like) in reference to the dark oblique bars on the caudal fin.
