Summary:
A tiny green, reddish or brown dwarfgoby with two diffuse to prominent dark spots on the pectoral-fin base, a large black spot on the caudal peduncle, 6 irregular internal pale bars or spots along the lower side behind the anal fin, and fine pale lines across the back.

Distribution |
Lord Howe Island, and Middleton and Elizabeth Reefs, and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Caledonia. Inhabits tidepools, lagoons and reef slopes in depths to 25 m. |

Dorsal fin usually VI + I,9; Anal fin usually I,8. Some pectoral-fin rays branched; cephalic sensory-pore system pattern 2; fifth segmented pelvic-fin ray present, usually about 1/10 length of fourth ray. |

Etymology |
The species is named for Douglass F. Hoese, in recognition of his important contributions to the systematics of gobioid fishes. |
