Summary:
A pale brownish lanternbelly becoming silvery-white below with pinkish-tan fins, a silvery-white gill cover, a black line running from the pectoral-fin base to the caudal-fin base and minute melanophores along ventral surface of body, on the  branchiostegal rays and anal and pelvic fins. This species has cycloid scales on the anterior side of the body, ctenoid scales on the caudal-fin base, and a short U-shaped luminous organ running longitudinally in the abdominal muscle from the thorax to slightly beyond the anus.

Distribution

Northwest Shelf, (and possibly south to west of Exmouth Gulf), Western Australia, to the Arafura Sea, north of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific: Taiwan, Japan and the Vietnam, at depths of 100–253 m.

Features

Dorsal fin IX + 10; Anal fin III, 7; Pectoral fin 15-16; Gill rakers 19-24; Scales between first dorsal-fin base and lateral line 4. 
Body moderately elongate, compressed. A rounded bony tubercle present on the chin at the symphysis of lower jaw. Scales large, weakly ciliated and deciduous; cycloid scales present anteriorly on lateral side of body and on caudal-fin base. Luminous gland U-shaped, running longitudinally in the abdominal muscle from the thorax to slightly beyond the anus, joining at the anterior extremities. Vertical line on cheek absent in preserved specimens.

Remarks

In Australia, this species was previously misidentified as Acropoma japonicum, which is known from the western Pacific Ocean (southern Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam) (Okamoto et al. 2019).

Etymology

The species is named in honour of prominent Russian geographer, biologist and ichthyologist Lev (Leo) Semyonovich Berg.
