Distribution

Off Newcastle to off Nowra, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in tropical and temperate waters.

Features

Vertebrae 59-60.
Distance from tip of snout to pelvic-fin origin 62.2-63.8% SL; tips of snout to anal-fin origin 80.3-82.4% SL. Tip of lower jaw distinctly curved up; large serrate fixed teeth in lower jaw; gill rakers tooth-like, on bony base. Lateral-line sections pierced by 4-7 pores above and below midline of scale. Pectoral fins elongate, longest fin ray distinctly longer than anal-fin base.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin hyalinus (glassy, transparent) in reference to the somewhat transparent skin.
