Distribution

Known only from Bathurst Channel of Port Davey, Tasmania. Individuals were collected on a rocky reef with a silty bottom,  depth 9 m.

Dorsal fin 78-79; Anal fin 68-69; Pectoral fin 16-17; Caudal fin 10; Pelvic fin 1; Vertebrae 11+36= 47; Mandibular pores 4; Infraorbital pores 0; Lateral scale rows 53; scale rows from anal-fin origin to dorsal-fin base 16; Branchiostegal rays 7.
Anterior anal fin-ray below dorsal-fin ray 19 and vertebra 14; anterior dorsal fin-ray above vertebra 7; developed gil1 rakers absent; caniniform vomerine teeth 6-7; palatine teeth absent; pseudobranch absent.
Scales ovoid, cycloid, imbricate; scales absent from fins, underside of head, infraorbital region, and snout; scales present on body including abdomen, pectoral-fin base and axil, cheeks, and interorbital area forward to level with rear margin of eye. 
Reproductive apparatus with simple, short, conical intromittent organ and, beneath it,small, grooved, trifurcate projection fitting into a low, hemispherical curtain when appressed, 

Similar Species

The similar Anacanthobythites platycaphalus differs from Anacanthobythites tasmanensis in having six infraorbital pores; Iateral scale rows 83; scale rows between anal-fin origin and dorsal-fin base 26; pectoral-fin rays 22 (vs. no infraorbital pores; lateral scale rows 53; scale rows between anal-fin origin and dorsal-fin base 16; pectoral-fin rays 16-17 in A. tasmanensis).

Etymology

The species is named for the type locality, the state of Tasmania, Australia.
