Anacanthobythites platycaphalus differs from Anacanthobythites tasmamensis in having six infraorbital pores; Iateral scale rows 83; scale rows between anal-fin origin and dorsal-fin base 26; pectoral-fin rays 22 (vs. no infraorbital pores; lateral scale rows 53; scale rows between anal-fin origin and dorsal-fin base 16; pectoral-fin rays 16-17 in A. tasmanensis).

The specific name platycephalus is from the Greek platys (broad, flat) and kephale (the head), alluding to the depressed head.
