The Supanose Whiptail, Coelorinchus supernasutus is a large slender species with a very large head and an extremely long snout. This species has a light organ just in front of the anus with an oval-shaped window.

Distribution |
Known from the Southwestern Pacific, off eastern Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. Supanose Whiptails are bathydemersal on the continental slope at depths between 500-900 m. In Australian waters, this species is more common on the ridges and seamounts in the Tasman Sea, and is rarely taken off mainland Australia. |

Dorsal fin II, 9; Pectoral fin 18-19; Pelvic fin V 7; Gill rakers on first arch 9-10; Branchiostegal rays 6. Snout extremely long, narrow, about one-half headlength, tipped with a broad flat diamond-shaped scute, anterolateral margins completely supported by bone. Underside of head covered with small, spinulated scales. Nasal fossa mostly covered with small scales. Body scales with 5-8 divergent rows of broad-based spinules. Light organ small, externally visible with black dermal window before anus. |

Etymology |
The species name supernasutus is from the Latin super meaning super and nasutus meaning large nosed, in reference to the extremely large snout of this species. |
