Indo-West Pacific; known from the Southwestern Indian Ocean, and off southern Australia, New Zealand and Japan; benthopelagic on the continental slope at 540-1100 m. |

D II, 8-11; P 18-24; V 7; GR (inner) 11-15; PC 16-20 A subspecies, C. serrulatus oceanus Iwamoto & Shcherbachev, 1991, inhabits seamounts and ridges of the southern Indian Ocean. |
Size |
A relatively large species that reaches a total length of 45 cm. |
Colour |
Overall greyish to brownish, mouth, gill cavities and orbital ring dark, fins dusky to blackish, anal fin darker anteriorly, becoming pale posteriorly. |
Fisheries |
Of minor commercial importance, trawled as bycatch below 900 m off Tasmania. |
