Coral Sea off Townsville, Queensland, to southwest of King Island, Tasmania, also Norfolk Ridge in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific and south Atlantic.

Haplomacrourus nudirostris Trunov 1980, Voprosy Ikhtiologii 20(1): 3-11 figs 1-2. Type locality: south-eastern Atlantic, off South Africa, 1230-1500 m. [37°09´S, 7°40´E].
