A slightly translucent barracudina with a greyish back, a blackish top of head and lower lips, body above anal-fin base to the caudal fin base silvery white, upper abdominal cavity black with fused peritoneal sections, abdomen silvery-white below, a slightly blackish caudal fin, and the other fins clear.
The luminescent duct extends along the ventral surface beyond the anterior margin of the eye, and the jaws are relatively short. 

In Australia, this species was previously referred to as Lestidium atlanticum.

Off Shark Bay to NE of Rowley Shoals, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is known from the Coral Sea, S of Alotau, Papua New Guinea, and off southern Taiwan.


Dorsal fin 10; Anal fin 28-30; Pectoral fin 13-14; Pelvic fin 9; Lateral-line scales 126-146: prepelvic 37‒39, predorsal 38‒39, preanal 55‒57, total scales 126–146. Vertebrae 85-88: prehaemal 41–43, caudal 43–47, prepelvic 37-39, predorsal 38–40, preanal 56–59, total vertebrae 85–88.
Luminescent duct extending beyond the anterior margin of the eye; jaws relatively short. Lateral line complete, extending to caudal-fin base.


The specific name longilucifer is from the Latin longus (= far, long) and lucifer (= the Roman name given to the morning star) in reference to the long luminescent duct that extends well forward of the eye.
