Distribution

Endemic to Western Australia, from Albany in the south, to Shark Bay.

Similar Species

The similar Rusty-spotted Toadfish, Torquigener pallimaculatus has pale rounded spots, surrounded by dark spots or specks, forming a rosette pattern.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin vicinus (= near, neighboring) presumably in reference to the similarity of this species to Torquigener tuberculiferus tuberculiferus.

Species Citation

Torquigener tuberculiferus vicinus Whitley 1930, Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 10(1): 31. Type locality: between Cape Naturaliste and Geraldton, Western Australia.
Subspecific name proposed for specimen described and figured by McCulloch 1915: 168, Pl. 34 (fig. 1).
