Distribution |
North-west of Point Cloates, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in tropical oceans, except the eastern Pacific. Adults are thought to be benthopelagic on the continental slope, while larvae and juveniles are meso- to bathypelagic in 700-2,500 m. |

Dorsal fin 17; Anal fin 15; Pectoral fin 14-15; Pelvic fin 7-9; Gill rakers 4 +1 + 15-18=22-26; Pyloric caeca 13-22; Transverse scale rows from the first lateral-line scale to dorsal-fin origin 23-27; Vertebrae 35-39 + 19-23 = 57-60. Upper jaw reaching posterior to below mid-orbit; anterior tip of lower jaw slightly projected ventrally; gill filaments relatively long, free at bases. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin calcar (= spur, heel spur) and the suffix -atus, meaning 'having a spur', 'armed with a spur'. |
