Distribution

Off North Solitary Island, New South Wales, to Bass Strait, south of Lakes Entrance; also the Taupo Seamount and the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Zealand.

Similar Species

Differs from congeners in having the following combination of characters: Dorsal rays X,15; Pectoral rays 15, rarely 14 or 16; Lateral line complete with 32–35 tubed scales; No antrorse serrations on lower edge of preopercle; Scales with basal cteni; Melanophores on caudal peduncle forming a large (larger than pupil) dark spot mid-laterally.

Species Citation

Serranops maculicauda Regan 1914, British Antarctic 'Terra Nova' Expedition 1910. Zoology 1(1): 16, Pl. 21 (Fig. 3). Type locality: off North Cape, Aupori Peninsula, North Island, ca. 34°23'S, 173°01'E, New Zealand, depth 70 fathoms.
