Distribution

Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in Indonesia, Timor Leste, Malaysia and Palau.
Small groups mostly inhabit rubble areas on coastal reefs and outer coral reef slopes.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin aureus (= golden) and ventris (= belly), in reference to the yellow lower half of the body.

Pomacentrus auriventris Allen 1991, Damselfishes of the World: 140, 224. Type locality: Flying Fish Cove, Christmas Island, Indian Ocean, about 10°29'S, 105°40'E, depth 5-10 m.
