Summary:
A rare brownish weedfish with scattered dark brown spots, and a distinct dark brown vertical bar from the to the rear end of the jaw.Hutchin's Weedfish has a low first dorsal fin, an orbital tentacle with three or four slender, elongate lobes, and usually with three elongate lobes on the nasal tentacle .

Distribution

Endemic to Western Australia, from Cockburn Sound to the Recherche Archipelago. Inhabits subtidal rocky reefs at depths to 15 m.

Features

Dorsal fin III + XXVI-XXIX,1-2; Anal fin II,18-21; Pectoral fin 11-12; Pelvic fin I,2; Caudal fin (segmented rays) 9-11; Lateral-line scales 17-24 (arched portion) + 12 -20 (straight portion); Gill rakers 1-2 + 4-6 = 6-8.  
Body of moderate depth (depth at anal-fin origin 18 22% SL) strongly compressed; caudal peduncle very slender. Head large (27-33% SL); eyes of moderate size (8 11% SL); mouth of moderate size (upper jaw length 9 13% SL), reaching to below middle of eyes about 27- 37 circumorbital head pores arranged biserially; each orbital tentacle with three or four slender, elongate lobes (3 5% SL); nasal tentacles multifid (usually with three elongate lobes); gill rakers simple.  
Body scales cycloid; lateral line scales extending to under dorsal spine 21 or as far as last dorsal spine, anterior scales overlapping, each with dorsal and ventral pore, posteriorly scales not overlapping, each with median pore at either end.  
Two dorsal fins, first dorsal not elevated (second spine 7-9% SL), originating over posterior preopercular margin; first dorsal connected to base of second dorsal; dorsal membrane connected to caudal fin; flaps extending posteriorly from spines bound in fin membrane or with short, free tips; basal half of last anal ray connected to caudal peduncle by membrane; anal fin membrane deeply incised; caudal fin rounded (17-20% SL). Pectoral fins large, rounded. Pelvic fins jugular, rays not reaching anus.
