Distribution

Off Broken Bay, NSW, 33° 30'S, 152°04'E in 922-1015 m. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the East-Indo-west Pacific: Indonesia and the Philippines.

Similar Species

The species is unique among paralepidids in having the dorsal fin originating far back, at about the same vertical as the anal-fin origin. It is most similar to Stemonosudis rothschildi in coloration, body proportions, and fin and vertebral formulae.

Etymology

The specific name retrodorsalis is from the Latin retro (= backwards, in past times) and dorsalis (= of, or relating to the back), in reference to the far posterior position of the dorsal fin.
