Summary:
A translucent blue-eye, with a silvery head and abdomen, and yellowish pelvic fins. Males have longer dorsal-fin rays, a yellowish leading edge on the dorsal fin, and may have a bluish hue dorsally. Females are smaller with smaller fins, less colourful than males, and have a yellowish caudal fin base, and pale yellow anterior anal-fin rays.

Distribution

Weipa region (Embley, Mission & Wenlock Rivers) in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, in freshwater and estuarine habitats. Elsewhere the species is widespread along the southern coast of central-southern New Guinea between the Kikori system of Papua New Guinea and Sorong, West Papua Province, Indonesia, near the western extremity of the Bird’s Neck Peninsula.
Inhabits brackish mangrove creeks, rainforest streams close to the sea, and coastal swamps, penetrating inland to just beyond the limit of the high tide. The Swamp Blue-eye often forms huge near-surface shoals.
The species may also occur on Sabai Island, Torres Strat, Queensland.

Features

Dorsal fin II-III + I, 6-7; Anal fin I, 10-13.
Dorsal fins positioned relatively far back on the body; first dorsal-fin origin the origin of the first dorsal fin above base of the fourth or fifth anal-fin ray; second dorsal fin above base of the posterior-most anal-fin rays. First dorsal-fin small, comprised of 2-3 weak spines, when depressed not reaching origin of second dorsal fin in mature males.

Fisheries

Rare in the aquarium trade.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin paludis (= marsh, swamp) and cola (to inhabit), in reference to the preferred habitat of this species.
