Summary:
Dark brownish above with melanophores extending down to the lateral-line along its entire upper margin, anterior portions of snout and lower jaw blackish, and a very broad black sub-marginal area on the abdomen.

Distribution

Marion Plateau, Coral Sea, Queensland, the Tasman Sea off eastern Australia and south to the Bass Strait off Gabo Island, Victoria (and possibly off Rowley Shoals, Western Australia).

Dorsal fin 10; Anal fin 31-34; Pelvic fin 9; Lateral line scales total 142-157, prepelvic 33-36, predorsal 39-42, preanal 53-57; Vertebrae total 87-90, prehaemal 35-38, caudal 50-53, prepelvic 34-36, predorsal 40-41, preanal 54-56.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin niger (= black) and rostrum (= snout), in reference to the black snout of this species.

Lestidium nigrirostrum Ho, Graham & Russell 2020, Zootaxa 4767(1): 78. Type locality: 17°30.1’S,  150°41.2’E, Marian  Plateau, ENE  of  Townsville, Queensland, northeastern Australia, Southwestern Pacific Ocean, demersal trawl, 752‒751 m.
