Genus Prionurus

Summary:
Fishes in the genus Prionurus can be easily recognised by the presence of three to seven fixed, keeled bony plates on the caudal peduncle (vs. either two fixed, keeled peduncular bony plates or one retractable caudal spine in other acanthurid fishes).
Species have disjunct distributions, either occurring at temperate latitudes and around cold-water upwellings in the tropics, or on tropical reefs with low diversity.
