Genus Austrolabrus


Summary:

A monotypic genus restricted to southern Australia with the following characteristics. 

Body moderately deep; upper jaw not reaching as far as eye; teeth caniniform, anterior pair in both jaws enlarged, upper jaw with enlarged curved canine at rear.

Scales moderately large, absent from head except on cheek and opercle; lateral-line abruptly curved downwards beneath last spines of dorsal fin.

Caudal fin truncate; pectoral fins rounded; ventral fins short, not reaching near anus.
