Summary:
This genus contains a single species confined to Australia and New Zealand.
Characteristics: Body deep, dorsal profile broadly rounded; snout slender, somewhat elongate, dorsal profile deeply concave; jaw teeth short, conical, in broad bands anteriorly, narrower laterally; vomer without teeth; large adults with bony knob on nape; scales absent from opercular bones; dorsal-fin spines increasing in length posteriorly, anterior soft dorsal rays much longer than longest spine, tips sometimes extending past caudal fin, posterior edge of dorsal fin concave; anal fin with short base, posterior margin straight, nearly vertical, spines large and strong; caudal fin slightly emarginated; pectoral-fin base in advance of pelvic-fin base.
