Genus Bathygadus

Species in the genus Bathygadus have a soft body, very fragile head bones and head covering and lack a chin barbel. The dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins rays are weak, and are almost hair-like towards the tips if they are elongated. They are mostly blackish in colour.

The genus was erected by Günther (1878) and comprises 12 species; three species are found in Australian waters.
