Distribution

Hibernia Reef, Western Australia, and the northern Great Barrier Reef to One Tree Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific. Inhabits reef crevices in tidepools, fringing reefs and patch reefs in lagoons, at depths to 16 m.

Features

Dorsal fin VI-VII, 9; Anal fin I, 8. Pectoral fin 14-15; Lateral scales 14-25.
Body depth 6.3 in SL. Pelvic fins slightly united medially; pelvic frenum weak to moderate, with an almost complete basal membrane; caudal fin rounded. Tongue tip rounded to truncate; gill opening extending forward to just anterior of pectoral-fin base.
Scales cycloid, absent on head, upper operculum and and anterior body; embedded scales present posterior to origin of second dorsal fin; 

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin nympha (= bride, nymph), possibly in reference to Smith describing Feia nympha as 'Clearly a degenerate fish'
