Distribution

Recorded in Australia from Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, the Dampier Archipelago to Wessel Island, Northern Territory, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Heron Island, Queensland. Occurs elsewhere in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits coral reefs, living on a variety of soft corals, usually preferring those of the genera Sinularia and Lobophytum.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I, 7-8; Anal fin I, 7-9; Pectoral fin 16-19; Longitudinal scale series 21-25.

Body depth at anus 4.7-7.1 in SL;  lower portion of gill arch bound to gill cover; head and nape scaleless.
