Coral Sea north of the Cato Reef, Queensland, to seamounts off Kiama, New South Wales, and the Norfolk Ridge, south of Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs off New Zealand. |

The specific name magna is from Latin (large), in reference to the large size of this species. |
