Distribution

Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, around the tropical north to Moreton Island, Queensland, and Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf to off Venus Bay, South Australia. 
Inhabits silty, muddy and sandy areas in depths of 12–64 m.

Features

Dorsal fin XII, 7–8; Anal fin I, 7–9; Caudal fin 14–15; Pectoral fin 13–14; Pelvic fin I, 3. Lateral line 10–12.
Body depth 37–42% SL; head sharply inclined, length 38–42% SL; interorbit with network of divergent bony ridges, forming shallow pits; 1st dorsal-fin spine short, about 1/3 length of 2nd spine, 3rd and succeeding spines gradually decreasing in length posteriorly.

Colour

Pale fleshy brown to dusky yellowish or reddish above, sometimes with a few small irregular darker blotches scattered on the body; fins often with faint dusky speckling; eyes blue.

Etymology

The specific name refers to the type locality - northern Queensland.
