Recorded in Australia from Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12°15'S) and One Tree Island, QLD (23°30'S); also at Cocos (Keeling) Island, Indian Ocean. Elsewhere in the tropical, west-central Pacific. Inhabits sandy bottoms in intertidal and coral reef areas.

Hetereleotris clara Jordan & Seale, 1906, Bull. Bur. Fish. (U.S.) for 1905 25: 392, pl. 36(2). Type locality: Pago Pago, Samoa.
