Summary:
A needlefish with a relatively broad, short snout, a protruding lower jaw with a firm fleshy point that encloses the upper jaw, straight vertical teeth, and a deep median groove between the eyes that does not narrow anteriorly. Some individuals have orange spots on the sides.

Distribution

Darwin, Northern Territory, to Bowen, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, west Pacific.

Features

Dorsal fin 21-22; Anal fin 21. 
Snout relatively broad and short, lower jaw protruding with a firm fleshy point that encloses the upper jaw; teeth straight (vertical); gill rakers absent; interorbital with a deep median groove which does not narrow anteriorly.
Caudal peduncle with a small dermal keel; caudal fin forked with a long lower lobe.

Belone punctulata Günther 1872, Proc. Zool. Soc. London 1871(3): 670. Type locality: Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
