Distribution

Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to the Solitary Islands, New South Wales, with juveniles to Sydney Harbour; also at Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits clear exposed outer reef areas or reef channels with consistent moderate to strong current.
