Summary:
A brownish seabream with white spots on each scale forming rows above lateral line, 4-5 brownish-orange stripes on lower sides, a large yellowish blotch below the rear of the dorsal fin, a yellowish-orange snout and a yellowish-orange botch on the pectoral-fin base.

Distribution |
Recorded in Australia from Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to off Broughton Island, New South Wales; also at Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island, and Holmes Reef and Frederick Reefs in the Coral Sea. Found elsewhere in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits coastal reefs, reef lagoons and outer reef slopes, sometimes forming large schools during the day. |
Feeding |
Carnivore - feeds at night on benthic invertebrates including crabs and gastropod molluscs, and occasionally on small fishes. |
Fisheries |
Fished commercially in parts of its range. |
Remarks |
Halstead et al. (1990) report that this species may cause ciguatera poisoning. |
