Summary:
A brown mudskipper, becoming silvery white below, with the head dark brown above, silvery white below, a pointed first dorsal fin with prominent black stripe and a pale margin, and a broad black stripe through the second dorsal-fin.

Distribution

Shark Bay, Western Australia, to Moreton Bay, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific, from the Red Sea and east Africa to Southern Japan, Australia and Samoa.

Features

Dorsal fin XI-XVI + 10-13; Anal fin 9-12; TRDB 18-26; Longitudinal scales 64-100. 
Head width 14.3-22.6%SL; pelvic fin length 11.3-15.2%SL; length of anal fin base 14.0-19.4%SL; length of D2 base 17.6-23.7%SL; pelvic fins almost completely to totally separated, pelvic frenum absent; first dorsal-fin margin concave or straight, fin high anteriorly; dorsal fins not connected by membrane; no elongated spines.

Colour

Sides and back brown, silvery white below, with a dark brown nape and upper half of head, lower half of head and pectoral-fin base silvery white; many small, white spots on head, a few on trunk; trunk with many narrow, short silvery bars ventrally and 3-4 dark brown, saddle-like blotches posterodorsally; first dorsal fin suffused with red and with pale fin margin and a broad black submarginal stripe and about 24 small, white spots on posterior two thirds of fin; second dorsal fin-margin red with a broad black stripe through middle of fin, basally pale; caudal fin with many brownish-red spots on fin rays; anal and pectoral fins pale; pelvic fin whitish.

Etymology

The specific name, argentilineatus, is from the Latin argentum (silver), and lineatus (lined), in reference to the vertical, silver lines on the ventral portion of the body.
