Summary:

A pale bronze to coppery-brown sweeper with a darker bar on the rear of the gill cover above the pectoral-fin base, a distinctly yellow or brown lateral line, a black leading edge and tip on the dorsal fin, and often dark margins on the anal and caudal fins.

Distribution	Endemic to Australia from Kangaroo Island, South Australia, to Shark Bay, Western Australia. Forms schools around rocky reefs to at least 40 m depth, but usually above 20 m.
Features	Dorsal fin V, 10-12; Anal fin III, 35-43; Caudal fin 17; Pectoral fin 16-18; Pelvic fin I, 5; Lateral-line scales 69-80. Body deep, 37–52% SL, moderately elongate, very compressed; caudal peduncle slender. Head moderately small 26–35% SL; eyes very large 40–48% HL; mouth moderately large, nearly vertical, upper jaw length 50–60% HL, maxillae reaching to below middle of eyes; teeth small, conical, band in each jaw with outermost largest, becoming smaller posteriorly; spines absent from head; preopercular margins with bony processes. Scales small, ctenoid, strongly attached, covering body and head except for snout, present on basal portion of anal fin; lateral line nearly straight, extending to margin of caudal fin. Single high dorsal fin with short base located centrally on back; anal fin with elongate base, first few rays considerably longer than those posteriorly; caudal fin forked. Pectoral fins prominent, upper rays much longer than those below. Pelvic fins arising below posterior side of pectoral fin bases, reaching anus.
Colour	Pale yellowish brown to dark brown with yellow to orange bar behind head above pectoral fin base, lateral line distinctly yellow or brown; leading edge and tip of dorsal fin, distal margin of anal fin and usually margin of caudal fin black.
