Summary:
A distinct swallower with vomerine teeth, and only a single row of emergent prickles above and below the lateral line - characters that are unique amongst all chiasmodontids (Melo 2016).

Distribution

Off Sydney, New South Wales, to the Cascade Plateau, Tasmania. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, more frequently in high latitudes. The species is bathypelagic, at depths of 1500-4835 m.

Similar Species

Differs from Dysalotus alcocki in having vomerine teeth in one to three rows, and a single row of emergent prickles above and below the posterior half of the lateral line (may also have prickles buried in the skin) vs. vomerine teeth absent, and three to five rows of emergent prickles above and below the posterior half of the lateral line in D. alcocki.
