Summary:
A pale grey to greyish-brown cod fading to white below, with brownish flecks on the body, and large eyes. Ribaldo have large eyes, and the anal fin is deeply indented and originates at about middle of the body.

Distribution

Southern Australia, from off Broken Bay, New South Wales, to southwest of Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia, including Tasmania; also on the southern Lord Howe Plateau and Norfolk Ridge. Elsewhere the ; species occurs in the east Atlantic, south Indian Ocean, and south-west Pacific (New Zealand). Ribaldo are benthopelagic around sea mounts, ridges and rises. Juveniles may be pelagic.

Features

Dorsal fin 54-59; Anal fin 18-21. 
Eyes relatively large, greater than snout length in diameter. Anal fin originating near midlength of body, deeply indented at midlength, sometimes appearing as two separate fins. Ventral light organ absent.

Feeding

Feed on fishes, crustaceans, molluscs and other benthic invertebrates.

Biology

Female grow to a larger size than males, and attain reproductive maturity at about 14 years of age, while males mature at about 8 years of age. Ribalso spaen during winter and early spring. 

Fisheries

Although not targeted, Ribaldo are taken as incidental bycatch in Australia's Southeast and Southern Shark Fishery. The species is caught on droplines, longlines and in bottom trawls.
