Distribution |
East of Broken Bay, New South Wales, to southwest of Beachport, South Australia, including Tasmania; also off Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in the Southern Hemisphere, on seamounts and ridges of the southern Indian Ocean, off southern Africa, South America, southeastern Australia and New Zealand. Benthopelagic at depths of 400-1400 m, usually 800-1000 m. |

Dorsal fin II, 9-11; Pectoral fin 13-18; Pelvic fin 7; Gill rakers (inner) 16-19; Pyloric caecae 12-14. Body scales densely covered with greatly reclined, broadly lanceolate spinules. Upper pectoral-fin ray and outer pelvic-fin ray extremely elongated, much longer than head. |

Overall silvery, sides of body with irridescent green tinge, fins dusky to blackish, mouth and gill cavities dark. |
Fisheries |
Trawled as bycatch in commercial fisheries and of minor commercial importance. |
