Summary:
A distinctive damselfish with 7 relatively broad dark bands on the head and body including a band on top of the head behind the eye, and a small spot at the upper pectoral-fin base. The bands are wider than the pale interspaces. Individuals may have dark fin margins.

Distribution

Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, to the Capricorn-Bunker Group, Queensland; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
