Distribution

Ningaloo Reef (22°S), WA, Rowley Shoals (17°30'S) and Scott Reef (14°03'S), WA, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12°15'S) and Shadwell Reef (11°27'S) to Lady Musgrave Reef (23°54'S), QLD, also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits sheltered inshore and outer reefs. Aggregations often feed in the water column above Acropora corals.

Chaetodon curacao Bloch, 1787, Naturg. ausländisch. Fische 3: 106. Type locality: East Indies (as Curacao).
