Summary:
A bright yellow scissortail with a reddish-orange stripe from the eye to the upper edge of the gill cover, and a submarginal reddish-orange band on the dorsal and anal fins. Divers often see groups of scissortails swimming upside down in caves and under ledges.

Distribution

Outer reefs of the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the southwest Pacific (Papua New Guinea).
Forms small aggregations in caves, crevices and under ledges and overhangs.

Features

Dorsal fin XI, 8-10; Anal fin III, 9-10.

Feeding

Planktivore - feeds on small crustaceans.

Biology

Males incubate the eggs in their mouths.
