Distribution |
Offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and off Flinders Island, and possibly north to the Torres Strait, to Saumarez Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west-central Pacific. Individuals or small groups inhabits shallow water along the edges of steep outer reefs and lagoon slopes. |
Fisheries |
Targeted in commercial, recreational and artisinal fisheries throughout its range, and is a prized gamefish. |
Etymology |
The specific m=name is from the Latin plagio (= oblique, slanting) and taenia (= band, ribbon) in reference to the oblique bars or bands along the side. |
