Summary:
A yellowish-tan marbled dragonet becoming white below, with a row of large irregular brown blotches or saddles along the back, a row of 8-10 large brown blotches along the midside, blue spots on the head, and 2-3 rows of blue spots along the side below the lateral line.

Distribution

Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory, to the southern Great Barrier Reef Queensland, and refs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical  west Pacific at depths to 42 m (usually 1-22 m).
Inhabits sandy areas, sometimes adjacent to reefs.

Features

Dorsal fin IV + 7-8; Anal fin 7; Pectoral fin 15-21.
Preopercular spine straight, elongate, with an antrorse spine at base, and 7–14 small antrorse serrae on the dorsal margin.

Etymology

The specific name pleurostictus is from the Greek pleura (= side, rib) and the Latin stictus (= spot), in reference to the three rows of small dark spots along the side below the lateral line.
