Scott Reef, Western Australia, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical West Pacific. |

Colour of a freshly dead specimen: cheek and rear half of body yellow-green, translucent elsewhere, with 5 darkish internal body bars; anterior nasal tube red; a bar on the cheek below the pupil, 8 diffues saddles on back, and bases of caudal-fin rays pink; dorsal fins yellow; scale margins on rear half of body dark. |

Etymology |
Named from the Greek zapotes, a hard drinker, in allusion to the red anterior nasal tubes of this species (Winterbottom, 1989). |
