Summary:
A pale shrimpgoby with five large dark brown blotches along the midside interspersed with brown mottlings, a pair of pale-edged black spots on the rear margin of the first dorsal fin, and brown speckles or spots scattered on the head and upper half of the body.

Distribution |
Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Western Pacific: Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Palau. Inhabits sandy and muddy areas in sheltered bays and lagoons. |
Features |
Dorsal fin VI + I,12; Anal fin I,12; Pectoral fin 16-18; Vertebrae 10+16=26; Gill rakers, lower limb first arch 6-7; Scales, longitudinal series 54-58, transverse series 15-16. Body depth 5.5-6.4 in SL; scales cycloid anteriorly, becoming ctenoid on rear of body, head naked. First dorsal fin tall; caudal fin symmetrically lanceolate, slightly longer than head; pelvic fins united, frenum well-developed. |
Remarks |
This species has previously been known as Vanderhorstia lanceolata. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin lanceolatus (= shaped like a lance-head), in reference to the symmetrically lanceolate caudal fin that is longer than the head. |
