Summary:
A pale shrimpgoby with five large dark brown blotches along the midside interspersed with brown mottlings, a pair of pale-edged black spots on the rear margin of the first dorsal fin, and brown speckles or spots scattered on the head and upper half of the body.

Distribution

Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Western Pacific: Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Palau. Inhabits sandy and muddy areas in sheltered bays and lagoons.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I,12; Anal fin I,12; Pectoral fin 16-18; Vertebrae 10+16=26; Gill rakers, lower limb first arch 6-7; Scales, longitudinal series 54-58, transverse series 15-16.
Body depth 5.5-6.4 in SL; scales cycloid anteriorly, becoming ctenoid on rear of body, head naked. First dorsal fin tall; caudal fin symmetrically lanceolate, slightly longer than head; pelvic fins united, frenum well-developed.

Remarks

This species has previously been known as Vanderhorstia lanceolata.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin lanceolatus (= shaped like a lance-head), in reference to the symmetrically lanceolate caudal fin that is longer than the head.
