Summary:
A pale brownish goby with reddish and greenish bands on the crest on top of the head (nuchal crest), a red first dorsal fin with a yellow midlateral stripe and a large black blotch on the rear of the fin, a red second dorsal fin with 2-3 yellow stripes, alternating red and yellow stripes on the caudal fin, and a red pectoral fin.

Darwin, Northern Territory, to Townsville, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific (Java, Lesser Sunda and Sulawesi islands, Indonesia). Inhabits muddy or sandy areas amongst mangroves. |

Dorsal fin VI + I,9-11; Anal fin I,8-10; Pectoral fin 16-19; Caudal fin (segmented rays) 9+8=17; Vertebrae 10 + 15-16 = 25-26; Longitudinal scales 37-64; transverse scales 19-26; predorsal scales 2-14. Head and body compressed; thin nuchal crest with rounded margin extending from above eye to origin of first dorsal fin; first dorsal fin distally rounded without filamentous spines; caudal fin rounded; scales small. |
Etymology |
The specific name rubropectoralis is from the Latin ruber (= red) and pectoralis (= of the breast) in reference to the red pectoral fin of this species. |
