Summary:
Adults are a bluish-brown above, pale silvery-grey below with anterior parts of the dorsal and anal fins bluish-grey, a black blotch on the rear margin of the gill cover, and no pelvic fins.
Juveniles are have dark bars and well-developed black pelvic fins, and often associate with jellyfishes in the water column.

Dorsal fin II-VI, 41-46; Anal fin II, 35-40; Vertebrae 24. Body deep, strongly compressed. Lateral line ending in weakly-developed scutes on caudal peduncle. Pelvic fins lost in individuals over 9 cm. |
