Summary:
A red to brown or yellowish-grey seaperch becoming white below, with four darker red to blackish bands over the rear half of body, and often 5th short bar from the gill cover to the dorsal-fin origin. The upper head and body is densely speckled with irregular dark spots, the rear margin of the gill cover is yellow and the fin rays are spotted. Juveniles are often whitish with black bands.

Distribution

Endemic to the southern half of Australia, from the Solitary Islands, New South Wales, to the Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia, including Tasmania. Inhabits rocky reefs at depths to 40 m, often resting on ledges

Features

Dorsal fin X, 16–18; Anal fin III, 8; Caudal fin 17; Pectoral fin 13–14; Pelvic fin I, 5; Lateral line scales 55–58.  
Body depth 38–41% SL; head length 39–43% SL; eye diameter 20–23% HL; preopercle with 3 large forward directed spines below. 

Colour

Red to brown or yellowish grey above, white below, with 4 darker red to black vertical bands over posterior half of body and 5th short band from opercle to dorsal-fin origin; black blotch just below lateral line in band under middle dorsal-fin spines; upper head and body densely speckled with irregular dark spots; free margin of opercles yellow; fin rays spotted.
